This notice explains how information is used by the Halfwayish meeting-place website and its Geoapify search tool.

Starting places and search results
When you submit a search, our server receives the two starting places, selected activity and any location choice you confirm. It sends starting-place text and coordinates to Geoapify to resolve locations, find places and estimate both driving journeys. Activity preferences determine which types of place are requested.
The search tool does not request your device’s GPS location. You can use a town or postcode rather than an exact home address. Do not include names, email addresses, health information or other unnecessary personal details in a location field.
The supplied search plugin does not save your search text, chosen places, routes or venue results as search history in the WordPress database. A confirmed location is held in the open page with a signed value valid for 15 minutes; editing the location or reloading the page clears the relevant choice. Expiry stops the value being accepted but does not itself close your browser page.
Why we use information
We use search details to provide the suggestions you request, temporary network-related records to protect the search allowance and service, and correspondence to answer enquiries.
The proposed lawful basis for this draft is legitimate interests: providing a requested planning service, preventing misuse and responding to communications, while considering the necessity of that use and its effect on your privacy.
Temporary records and retention
- Rate limits use a salted, one-way hash derived from your network address, together with counters. The plugin does not put the raw network address in these counters. Visitor-counter records expire after 20 minutes; site-wide totals expire after two days. Expired database entries are subject to WordPress cleanup.
- Chosen locations remain in the current browser page until cleared or reloaded; signed values expire after 15 minutes.
- Fixed-location administrator connection-test reports contain redacted diagnostics and expire after 15 minutes. They are not visitor search history.
- Hosting, security and provider systems may keep their own request logs.
- If you contact us, we retain correspondence for 3 months.
Geoapify and other recipients
Geoapify receives the location-related requests needed for your search. The plugin makes these calls from our server and does not add your name, email address or browser network address to them. Anything you put into the location fields is still part of the text submitted for lookup.
Geoapify’s published API policy describes logging request bodies, headers, network addresses and timestamps for service operation and troubleshooting. It states that successful-request information is generally retained for no more than 24 hours, and describes EU hosting and infrastructure suppliers including Cloudflare. Read its current Privacy Policy for its own processing details and exceptions.
Our hosting, website security and email suppliers may handle information needed to run the site or respond to you: Geoapify. We may also disclose information where a legal obligation requires it.
Links and directions
Venue details are based on Geoapify/OpenStreetMap data. Opening a venue website or OpenStreetMap link sends your browser to that service. Choosing a Google Maps directions link sends the selected origin and destination coordinates to Google in the link. Those services receive the normal information associated with your visit and apply their own policies. No Google Maps API request is made by this search tool.
Cookies and browser storage
The supplied Halfwayish theme and search plugin do not add advertising pixels, analytics trackers or marketing cookies, and do not store searches in browser local storage. Inter font files and the bundled artwork are served by this website.
WordPress sign-in, hosting or additional plugins can use their own cookies or storage. The cookies and any optional services actually enabled on this site are: Google, Wordfence . Update this section if you add analytics, advertising, embedded maps, forms or other services.
Processing locations
Our supplier locations and any international-transfer arrangements are: United Kingdom and Germany. Do not assume all processing stays in one country merely because the mapping provider describes EU hosting.
Your choices and rights
You can browse without submitting a search. Providing two starting places is optional, but we cannot compare journeys without them. Using an approximate town or postcode limits the detail you provide.
Depending on the circumstances and legal basis, you can request access, correction, deletion or restriction of personal information, and data portability where applicable.
You can object to processing based on legitimate interests. Contact info@halfwayish.uk to raise an objection or exercise a right. Where processing relies on consent, you can withdraw it without affecting earlier lawful processing.
You can complain to the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office. You can also contact us first so we can try to resolve your concern.
Automated suggestions
Places are ranked using estimated driving times and the difference between the two journeys. These are optional planning suggestions; the search tool does not make decisions about you with legal or similarly significant effects or build a persistent visitor profile.
